TOMS RIVER β A major New Jersey home builder filed for bankruptcy Friday, throwing into question when its unfinished homes in Ocean County will be completed. Kara Homes, of East Brunswick, filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in federal court, listing $350.2 million in assets and $296.8 million in liabilities. In Chapter 11 bankruptcy, a company reorganizes, with the intention of remaining in business. Lacey, Little Egg Harbor and Stafford townships all have Kara Homes developments in which houses are still in the midst of construction, but town officials say they don't think residents will be severely affected. βThe bonds are sufficient to cover the infrastructure, so there is money to finish the roads and sewer pipes built for the development, and that won't be affected by the bankruptcy," said Little Egg Harbor Administrator Raymond J.
Three workers were injured and one died when a truss collapsed at a construction site in Milford, Monday afternoon. The workers were putting up wooden trusses on an addition being made to the South Hill Church on S. Hill Road. One truss fell creating a domino affect collapsing several trusses. The four men were trapped for about 45 minutes while Milford police and firefighters worked to rescue them. Two workers were in critical condition and two were in serious condition when they were transported to Huron Valley, Beaumont and Providence Hospitals with head, neck and back injuries. .
Canadian food processing company Maple Leaf Foods has announced that it will not proceed with the construction of a new primary pork processing facility in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The company had previously announced its plans to construct a $110 million plant to replace its existing facility in Saskatoon. Bid proposals received on the project in the spring of 2006 far exceeded the capital costs estimated for this project. .
DiVosta scored highest in customer satisfaction among home builders in Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties, according to a J.D. Power and Associates survey. Minto Builders and G.L. Homes ranked second and third. The study, released Wednesday, ranked home builders who sold at least 150 homes last year in 34 of the largest markets in the country. Despite the good scores of some builders, buyers in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast β which made up one market in the survey β experienced an average of 15 problems with their new homes, one more problem than the national average. The most frequent problems faced by local home buyers involved landscaping, the quality of kitchen cabinets, and cracks in sidewalks, driveways and foundations.
Bhisho - The Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) has approved R54 million for the construction of salt crystallization plant at the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ). The construction of a purpose-built pure vacuum-dried (PVD) salt crystallization facility for the salt company Cerebos, will start in February 2007 within the IDZ near Port Elizabeth. The IDZ is one of the government's high priority projects to bring about significant economic benefits to the Eastern Cape region, create employment, energise industrial development and promote international trade. DBSA investment officer for this project, Simon Vincent pointed out that the Eastern Cape was one of the bank's designated "hot spots" in dire need of infrastructure development and job creation.

The School District of Manatee County is accepting statements of qualifications from firms for Construction Management at Risk Services for Manatee High School-Davis Building-Remodeling and Renovation. The Davis Building was constructed circa 1926 and had renovation work performed in the 1980's and 1990's. Scope of work will include structural issues as well as systems, cosmetic, and functional remodeling and renovation. The total project budget is $10,000,000.00. The applicant must be certified to perform the work in the State of Florida at the time of application. Further, if a corporation, the applicant must be registered by the Department of State, Division of Corporations, to operate in the State of Florida at the time of the application. The selection will be made in accordance with State Requirements for Educational Facilities (SREF), as may be amended, Florida Statute 287.055, and the School Board of Manatee County's procedures and criteria.
