New transit chief ready for the ride

As commuters press in, the GO train doors slide open and a freshly shaved Rob MacIsaac shuffles out of the cold, dark early morning and takes a seat.

It's 6:30 a.m. at the Aldershot station in Burlington, and like so many do every weekday, the new head of the Greater Toronto Transportation Authority is riding into Toronto.

Holding his cup of Tim Hortons, he searches a newspaper for the story about his nomination, made official Thursday.

Grinning, he says, "Remember Cy Sperling, the president of the Hair Club? I'm not just the president but a client?"

A president, of sorts. But will he have any power?

By many accounts in Burlington, where MacIsaac is the outgoing mayor, the 44-year-old former commercial real estate lawyer is a charismatic consensus builder.

Maple Leaf Foods abandons Saskatchewan construction plans

Canadian food processing company Maple Leaf Foods has announced that it will not proceed with the construction of a new primary pork processing facility in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

The company had previously announced its plans to construct a $110 million plant to replace its existing facility in Saskatoon. Bid proposals received on the project in the spring of 2006 far exceeded the capital costs estimated for this project.

Permits drop in Port St. Lucie for single-family homes

PORT ST. LUCIE — The number of permits issued for new single-family homes in the city dropped last month to the lowest level since the building boom hit in 2002.

The city issued 159 single-family permits in September, about 50 fewer than the amount issued in August and a 76 percent decrease from September 2005. Optimistic because of lower interest rates, a small increase in multifamily home construction and the selling of surplus homes, city officials are betting permits will level off in the next year to about 200 permits per month.

Construction On Airport's Runway 26 To Be Completed Earlier Than ...

(AP) -- Officials at Lexington's Blue Grass Airport say the re-opening of the shorter of its two runways will occur by Thanksgiving.

Taxiway construction delayed by the crash that killed 49 people on August 27 was resumed ten days ago on runway 26, the runway that Comair 5191 mistakenly used.

Airport Director Michael Gobb says construction on the taxiway is to continue for 20 to 30 days.

The project includes a new taxiway connection to the 7,000-foot runway for commercial flights and demolition of the short taxiway connection that Flight 5191 should have used.

Your Stories: Bridge Construction Delays in DeWitt

DeWitt (WSYR-TV) - Construction continues on the new Fly Road bridge over the New York State Thruway in DeWitt, and some of you are wondering when the work will wrap up, so you can use the brand new bridge.

The Thruway Authority says the project is running about three weeks behind schedule, and they say weather is to blame.

So what's left to do on the Fly Road bridge? Crews still have some paving work ahead of them.

That will happen on the bridge itself and on the approach to the bridge. They're hoping to knock off that part of the project next week.

Then, they'll install some guide rails and put down road markings on the Thruway itself.

The Thruway Authority estimates that work will be done by the beginning of November, making a lot of commutes to work, and elsewhere, a whole lot easier.

Web Marketing Association Names Best Construction Web Site ...

West Simsbury, CT (PRWEB) October 16, 2006 -- www.webaward.org - The Web Marketing Association is pleased to announce the Best Construction Web Site Winner as part of the 10th annual international WebAward Competition, the Internet's premier website award competition.

"Many construction sites have struggled to move beyond the "brochureware" phase and look like online versions of their printed sales materials," said William Rice, President of the Web Marketing Association. "Feedback from WebAward judges can help websites move beyond this phase allowing them to attract more web visitors."

Construction websites represent a highly competitive industry within the WebAward competition. Each website is judged on the same seven criteria including:
- Design
- Innovation
- Content
- Technology
- Interactivity
- Copy writing
- Ease of use

The overarching goal of the WebAward Competition is to provide a forum to recognize the people and organizations responsible for developing the most effective construction websites on the Net today.
