The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneer Farm is pioneering new technology with its state-of-the-art Dairy Center. The new 30,852 square foot facility, scheduled to open the end of October, will be the first university facility in the nation that has robotic milking equipment. UWP School of Agriculture Dairy Science Professor Mike Mee says he learned about robotic milking during a trip to the Netherlands. To compare robotic milking with traditional milking procedures, the facility will also have a traditional double five-herringbone parlor--which will allow students and the public to compare the two milking procedures side by side. Each of the two robots can milk 50-60 cows while the double five-herringbone parlor can milk 80-90 cows. Because of the plan to increase herd size, the facility will include a new free stall barn and an expanded lagoon.
Officials with southwest China's Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality made pledges at an ongoing conference about drought relief that they will strengthen the water conservancy construction "at all costs" to avoid the recurrence of the abject droughts torturing the two places this summer. In the next few years, Chongqing will invest more money in the infrastructure construction of farmland water conservancy and complete the construction of a drought monitoring and forecast system, said Liao Daiyu, vice head of the city's flood control and drought relief office. The official added that the office will also work on how to utilize the limited water resources in a more efficient way when the area is hit by a drought again. The neighboring Sichuan Province also promised a large scale water conservancy construction before the next summer.
Gabriel "Sonny" Emmett Jr., an El Paso real estate developer and home builder who had a hand in developing several West Side subdivisions, including the area around Coronado Country Club, died Monday at age 78. His real estate and home construction companies operated under the name Emmett Inc., and Emmett and Associates. For several years, he also owned Sun Datsun and Rolls Royce, where Casa Nissan is now located in East-Central El Paso. "He was the finest gentleman I ever met," said Guillermo Licon, owner of SLI Engineering Inc., which did engineering and land development for Emmett's company. He also was a friend of Emmett's. "He was a good businessman, fair. He acquired land and had a vision to develop it. He was a good family man." Tom Emmett, one of Emmett's sons who worked with his father at Sun Datsun, recalled how he gave big discounts, and in some cases, gave free cars to people going through bad times.
JACQUIE Norton has returned to Mount George after the tragic car accident in February which left her paralysed from the chest down, and she is keen to thank the community that rallied together to complete her new home. "I'm overwhelmed, it's just blown me away. I didn't believe that people could get together and help others in situations like this," said Jacquie. At the time of the accident the Nortons' home was in the very early stages of construction but thanks to a special group of close friends including Lyn King and Cindy Smoothy a campaign was set in place to finish the home to accommodate her special needs before she returned from hospital. .
PORT ST. LUCIE The number of permits issued for new single-family homes in the city dropped last month to the lowest level since the building boom hit in 2002. The city issued 159 single-family permits in September, about 50 fewer than the amount issued in August and a 76 percent decrease from September 2005. Optimistic because of lower interest rates, a small increase in multifamily home construction and the selling of surplus homes, city officials are betting permits will level off in the next year to about 200 permits per month. .
