The Koc Group, a strong force driving the Turkish economy, opened a new factory on Friday in Russia, the group's first facility planned and built abroad. The new white goods production plant was built in the city of Vladimir, 110 kilometers east of Moscow. Rahmi Koc, honorary chairman of the Koc Group, delivered a speech at the factory's opening ceremony. "We spent €90 million to build this facility. Although this amount does not seem big, the step we took is really great," Koc said. Koc said that Russia was chosen for investment by the Koc Group because of the great potential in the appliances industry in the country. "The stability in the Russia's economy and our faith in this country encouraged us to make such an important investment here," he said. Arcelik's new Beko LLC refrigerator and washing machine factory was built on 545,000 square meters by Kaya Construction Co.
Rich Martin: Over the next few segments of Do It Yourself, we will be examining new trends in the housing industry for 2007. Owners of empty homes in Kent are being targeted by a new initiative which, if taken up by other councils, could help to bring thousands of derelict properties back into use. Kent County Council last week launched a £5m fund which will provide interest-free loans to landlords, developers and owners to cover the cost of renovation and refurbishment of about 9,000 empty properties in the east of the county. One of the main stumbling blocks for owners of empty homes is often a lack of funds with which to renovate a property and bring it back into use. So the county is working with councils in Dover, Shepway, Swale and Thanet to offer any owner of an empty property - or anyone considering buying one - interest-free loans for renovation or refurbishment of to £25,000 per single dwelling.
MANATEE - Adults 50 and over make up the largest percentage of homeowners across the country, and the numbers keep growing substantially. "Florida has somewhat of an older population but it's got its own natural population that will be aging in place there," said Paul Emrath, assistant staff vice president of Housing Policy Research for the National Association of Home Builders. During a teleconference Wednesday, experts looked at the changing trend in home purchases as the Baby Boomers hit retirement age. Cascades, a 55-plus community located off Lockwood Ridge Road, includes residents who moved to this area from elsewhere in the country, as well as longtime Floridians. Those residents say part of the reason they chose to move into the development was the age restrictions.
The clank and growl of bulldozers may be slowing in America's teardown suburb of Hinsdale, but it isn't grinding to a halt. After hitting a record last year, when 118 houses were torn down in the community, only 51 permits for demolition were issued in 2006 through the end of September, said Daniel Schoenberg, Hinsdale's director of community development. "Clearly, teardowns this year have been slower," he said. While construction of McMansions continues in the wealthy western suburb, buyers' appetites for megahouses have waned dramatically, said housing consultant Tracy Cross. "Once the price of a house gets above $1.5 million, the number of buyers is getting very, very thin," said Cross, of Tracy Cross & Associates in Schaumburg.
