Wrekin Construction will run 2,000 training courses a year for its own employees alone after opening its new centre in Shifnal. And its bosses say the move is a "bite-sized" way of tackling the problem of a shortage of skilled workers in the industry. Former chairman Tom Frain, who founded the company more than 45 years ago, was justifiably proud of the new two-storey centre with four dedicated training rooms, complete with equipment, as well as toilet, kitchen and changing room facilities. He was keen to stress that Wrekin had never had problems recruiting qualified staff but admitted a skills shortage did exist in his industry generally. A Mount Holly neighborhood across from the U.S. National Whitewater Center could fill out soon now that a New York home builder has bought the remaining lots in the subdivision.Baker Residential opened a model home Tuesday in RiverFront and is planning about three dozen houses near the Catawba River. The entire subdivision has about 210 home lots, and the first houses were built in the late 1990s. Plans for RiverFront also call for a marina on the river. The subdivision is off Tuckaseegee Road, a half mile from N.C. 273. Baker's planned homes range in size from 2,126 to 3,159 square feet, and in price from about $200,000 to $300,000. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, on Sunday, laid the foundation stone of Kankarbagh Drainage Scheme near the tempo stand saying the work on it would begin within a matter of weeks and would be completed within two years to rid the area from any drainage problem in the future.
"We had been waiting for this moment for over 12 years and today we have taken the first step in implementing this project. Once completed, the dwellers of Kankarbagh would not have to worry about rain water accumulating on the streets like they experienced this past monsoon season," Kumar said.
"Patna is a city but none of the facilities available here are even remotely suitable for a city of the size of Patna. We have initiated a number of projects and they will take time to complete but there are too many obstacles in our way that we are trying to overcome," he further said.
Existing home sales across South Florida could rebound in the next three to six months, but demand for new homes probably won't pick up until 2008, a real estate analyst said Wednesday.
"The Realtors will get happy before the builders," Brad Hunter told more than 400 people attending an Urban Land Institute conference at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in West Palm Beach.
If hurricane season ends Nov. 30 without another storm hitting the region, hesitant buyers will start making offers on the glut of unsold homes, said Hunter, who runs the South Florida division of MetroStudy, a West Palm Beach consulting firm. It will take about 18 months after that for new home sales to increase, he said.
Other real estate observers are more skeptical of short-term improvement in a local housing market that slowed dramatically in 2006 after the five-year boom when the price of a typical home more than doubled to well above $300,000.
