FROM OLD-TIMERS who have been inducted to young athletes still competing who may be future members, the new Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame is a huge hit. Just opened in its new digs at the Halifax Metro Centre, the Hall of Fame is a glamorous facility, displaying equipment, uniforms, pictures and complete lists of Nova Scotias sport heroes and builders in sparkling showcases and lockers. Visitors can watch film and video highlights in a sport theatre and access detailed information on inductees through a series of computers. While relishing the new location for the first time, current track star, Canadian record holder and national team member Adrienne Power of East Jeddore points out "there are interactive things for kids to do. Theyll love the place when they first see it and want to come back when they are older with a real appreciation for whats here." The interactive area referred to by Adrienne will be a major attraction for the video-game set and for adults, too.
The Lomas Verdes community, developed by San Diego-based Corky McMillin Cos. in Chula Vistas Otay Ranch, is adding a swimming pool as a perk for its residents. Construction of the 1,800-square-foot Enclave Swim Club will start in October and is set for completion in June. We need to offer more with our homes, said Rey Ross, project manager for McMillin Lomas Verdes. The swim club will cater to residents living in the Indigo, Jacaranda and Terracotta subdivisions. In todays day and age we need to have amenities, like a swim club, that bring value to the community and complements it, Ross said. The swim club is planned for Spanish-style architecture in a country club setting, according to Ross. The pool area will consist of a spa, a wading pool for children, a playground, an open-air party area and two barbecue areas.
Some homes have a certain air about them. And this new-build home is no exception, exuding the charm and Old World style of a French countryside chateau. Indeed, local custom home builder JP McMahon Builders created a breath of fresh air in the Windy City with the help of James W. Livingston, CKD, who designed the kitchen. The project marked Livingston’s first collaboration with JP McMahon. It was completed just a few months ago, notes Livingston. "The client gave us creative control and a large space to work with… The approximate size of this kitchen is 18'x30'. The large expanse of the kitchen warranted a large, central island to seat at least four people," recalls the designer, whose firm, Livingston Kitchens, is located in Chicago, IL.
Kara Homes' bankruptcy filing could hurt a number of banks and make lenders more cautious about lending to builders as the real estate market slumps. The Chapter 11 filing last week by the East Brunswick-based home builder shows a surprising number of lenders facing large amounts of potential losses, analyst Albert Savastano wrote in a research report Monday. .
