  Don't miss the Braveheart Charge

Hundreds of people, including volunteers wearing blue "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" T-shirts, will join star Ty Pennington and the entire "extreme team," as they charge toward the Koepke family home at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1.

The symbolic gesture, and one of the highlights of the weekly, one-hour show, is a symbolic gesture of power and unity that has become the show's trademark.

"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" has won back-to-back Emmy Awards as Best Reality Program (non-competitive). It is entering its fourth season on ABC.

Log on to www.extrememakeoverwisconsin.com and find out to volunteer.

The giant white building off I-480?

Imagine, 30-foot ceilings, an open floor plan with a wall of windows and enough storage space for your lifetime and the lifetime of everyone you know. That's what is in the 3-year-old, 400,000-square-foot gem of a building off I-480 in Brook Park.

If you drive the stretch of I-480 near West 130th, you might have seen the blue-trimmed, white structure take shape in 2003. I watched it go up and was pleased that Cuyahoga County was gaining a big manufacturer. The location is great and the visibility even better to let everyone know who you are and what you make.

The building, on 34 acres owned by Walter and Karin Laich, was built for their Laich Industries Corp., which manufactured lawn chairs, laundry baskets, kitchen accessories, sports items like collectible helmets and other plastic products.

New city manager reveals his plans

Picture this: David Corliss is guest speaker at a Lawrence Chamber of Commerce event last week. When the noon start time arrives, no one has stepped up to introduce Lawrence's newly named city manager.

No problem. Corliss steps to the front of the room on his own.

“Thank you for the warm introduction," he deadpans. “I'm Dave Corliss, and there has been a clerical error. I'm the new city manager."

There he is, Lawrence: Dave Corliss.

Two weeks ago, city commissioners made Corliss the sixth city manager in Lawrence history. A 16-year veteran of City Hall, Corliss started as a management analyst in 1990, then became director of legal services in 1996 and an assistant city manager in 2000.

Now he's in the big chair and is putting on a big show for anybody who wants to hear about a new direction for the city.

Get Ready for Your Remodel

If remodeling contractor Dale Armstrong could give potential clients only one piece of advice, it would be, "Get ready for sticker shock."

"You always have the shock factor when they find out the price of what they want to do. So be prepared for that," said Armstrong of JAFA Enterprises Inc. Armstrong’s been building homes since 1989, with a specialty in remodeling since 1993.

Swim Club Construction Gets Under Way in Chula Vista

The Lomas Verdes community, developed by San Diego-based Corky McMillin Cos. in Chula Vistas Otay Ranch, is adding a swimming pool as a perk for its residents.

Construction of the 1,800-square-foot Enclave Swim Club will start in October and is set for completion in June.

We need to offer more with our homes, said Rey Ross, project manager for McMillin Lomas Verdes. The swim club will cater to residents living in the Indigo, Jacaranda and Terracotta subdivisions.

In todays day and age we need to have amenities, like a swim club, that bring value to the community and complements it, Ross said.

The swim club is planned for Spanish-style architecture in a country club setting, according to Ross. The pool area will consist of a spa, a wading pool for children, a playground, an open-air party area and two barbecue areas.
