Job Training Initiative Includes Free Construction Classes

So much to build and not enough builders. Governor Haley Barbour says rebuilding here is suffering because of a tremendous shortage of qualified construction workers. That's why on Monday the governor threw his support behind an initiative called "I'm GREAT." GREAT is an acronym for Gulf Rebuild: Education, Advancement and Training. The goal is to train 20,000 Gulf Coast residents from Texas to Mississippi in basic construction over the next three years.

Once they get the skills, the students in a heating and air conditioning class at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College believe they'll have little trouble landing jobs.

"I thought it would be a good opportunity," said William Tune. "The classes are free so you just come in get a good education that's real quick.

Harrison Ave. Construction Costing Local Businesses

Construction along Harrison avenue between Alpine and Mulford has made life more difficult on motorists, forcing us to leave earlier or even take alternate routes to get to the places we need to go. But while the congestion has meant longer travel times for some, it has also meant fewer customers for local businesses.

"Business is probably about half what we did before construction started," says Chase Byerley, an assistant manager at Culver's.

Shops and restaurants along Harrison Ave. are normally busy on weekends. But now, those tables and aisles are empty which has business owners extremely worried.

"Saturdays have slowed down and that's normally our busiest day. I think the Harrison traffic is a lot of that," says John Reisenbigler, owner of Amish Furniture Specialties.

Commercial Construction Gains Ground as Residential RE Slips

BY MOLLY NANCE

As the end of the year approaches, the construction industry will see a smooth transition into 2007, a prediction based on the 31st annual CIT Construction Industry Forecast.

CIT Construction offers financial products and services to contractors, equipment dealers, equipment-rental companies and other construction-related clients. The firm is a unit of CIT Group Inc., a New York City-based commercial and consumer finance company, with $68 billion in managed assets.

Its annual report is a national culmination of industry insiders predictions for a relatively positive future for the next year, including an upswing in the commercial real estate market.

The 900 contractors and equipment distributors that were surveyed measured their perceptions of next years progress from what is called an Optimism Quotient, or OQ.

FEDERAL GRANT TO SEED NEW MINORITY-OWNED CONSTRUCTION BUSINESSES ...

Cleveland -- ShoreBank Enterprise Cleveland (SEC) has been awarded a $700,000 grant from the United States Department of Health and Human Services to expand its efforts to develop and nurture small businesses, especially minority-owned construction firms in the Cleveland community.

ShoreBank Enterprise Cleveland, a non-profit affiliate of ShoreBank Corporation, will use the federal grant to fuel ShoreGrowth, a small business loan fund. Through the fund, SEC increases the accessibility of loans, investments and other financial resources that helps foster the success of young and growing companies in Clevelands urban neighborhoods.

The new money will augment our ability to provide seed capital and business advisory services that will develop new opportunities for residents in the construction sector that will benefit the entire community, said Chris Warren, President, ShoreBank Enterprise Cleveland. The grant represents our ongoing commitment to helping Cleveland companies and residents to secure a larger share of the construction contracts and projects throughout the region, added Warren.

Roni Thompson came to ShoreBank Enterprise Cleveland for help two years ago as she was just beginning R.L.

THE AGENDA

A slowdown in the nation's overheated housing market has some analysts predicting home construction is dropping into a bottomless chasm. But things may not be so bleak.

For one thing, the stocks of home-building firms are enjoying a bull run on Wall Street of more than 20 percent since midsummer. Part of the reason: anecdotal reports that a few more buyers are motoring to sales centers at outlying subdivisions.

A fresh reading on the industry occurs Wednesday, with housing starts for September. In August, the level of construction plummeted by 6 percent, a worse showing than analysts were expecting, to an annual rate of 1.665 million units. Watch for a very modest rebound.

Recently, sales of new homes have been running 22 percent below the levels of last autumn, said Mario Ricchio, senior home-building analyst for Zacks Investment Research.
