Non-residential building underpins strong construction growth

The seasonally adjusted value of building work undertaken in Queensland increased by 4.9% in the June quarter, above the national growth rate of 4.3%, new ABS data shows.

Growth was driven by a 7% jump in the value of non-residential building work, ahead of the nationwide increase of 5% but dwarfed by the remarkable 34.3% expansion recorded in WA and 29.4% in ACT.

The value of new residential building work grew by 4%, compared with the national rate of 3.3%. Tasmania registered growth of 7.3%, Victoria 6.6% and WA 4.7%, while SA (0.2%) and NSW (1.2%) recorded weak growth.

Alterations and additions rose by 7% nationally, led by NSW (10.2%), Victoria (5.3%) and Tasmania (3.6%). The value of renovations was up by 2.4% in Queensland.

Fresh finance data released today by ABS indicates a further slowdown in residential construction ahead, with the seasonally adjusted value of owner-occupied housing commitments (excluding renovations) dipping by 1.3% in August.

New Home Sales in US Probably Fell in August to 1.04 Mln Pace

Sept. 27 (Bloomberg) -- New home sales in the U.S. probably fell in August to the second-lowest level in more than three years, adding to inventories and deepening the slowdown in the housing market, economists said before a report today.

Purchases of new homes, which account for about 15 percent of the market, dropped 3 percent to an annual pace of 1.04 million, according to the median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey of 64 economists. An industry report this week showed the first drop in prices for existing homes since 1995.

The Federal Reserve, which last week held its benchmark rate unchanged for a second month after 17 prior increases, said the weakening housing market is contributing to a wider slowdown. Record numbers of unsold houses have dragged down builder profits and depressed prices, denying consumers cash from mortgage refinancing that fueled spending the past few years.

Secrets to Creating a Positive First Impression

People can be rather subjective when forming impressions. One example of this is the notion of "love at first sight." Two strangers meet, and for reasons unknown – yet undeniably strong – become inseparable.

In contrast, this same reasoning can cause us to immediately dismiss a well-intended and capable person even before we get to know him or her.
Similar first impressions can take place in your showroom. For instance, a customer might think twice before setting foot in a store with an unflattering typeface on the sign. Another may not notice signage, but might be turned off by an overzealous employee.

The reasons for negative first impressions can be vast, as they differ with individual opinions. Nonetheless, the fact that customers might be driven away, whatever the reason, cannot be ignored.
