Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs will visit today the construction site of Torrevaldaliga Nord project, an advanced clean coal power plant in the Italian town of Civitavecchia, near Rome. The project has recently won the Powergen Award. “Clean coal technologies contribute to the three core objectives of the new European Energy Policy: security of supply, fight against climate change and competitiveness of the European economy. The development of low carbon plants, like this one in Civitavecchia, should be one of the common EU objectives that the Commission wants to put forward in its EU Strategic Energy Review", Commissioner Piebalgs said.

In the Torrevaldaliga Nord project, the Italian electricity retailer Enel will transform a fuel oil plant into a clean coal by adopting emissions-abatement technologies.

Classy new home a big victory for sports hall of fame

FROM OLD-TIMERS who have been inducted to young athletes still competing who may be future members, the new Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame is a huge hit.

Just opened in its new digs at the Halifax Metro Centre, the Hall of Fame is a glamorous facility, displaying equipment, uniforms, pictures and complete lists of Nova Scotias sport heroes and builders in sparkling showcases and lockers. Visitors can watch film and video highlights in a sport theatre and access detailed information on inductees through a series of computers.

While relishing the new location for the first time, current track star, Canadian record holder and national team member Adrienne Power of East Jeddore points out "there are interactive things for kids to do. Theyll love the place when they first see it and want to come back when they are older with a real appreciation for whats here."

The interactive area referred to by Adrienne will be a major attraction for the video-game set and for adults, too.

Permits drop in Port St. Lucie for single-family homes

PORT ST. LUCIE — The number of permits issued for new single-family homes in the city dropped last month to the lowest level since the building boom hit in 2002.

The city issued 159 single-family permits in September, about 50 fewer than the amount issued in August and a 76 percent decrease from September 2005. Optimistic because of lower interest rates, a small increase in multifamily home construction and the selling of surplus homes, city officials are betting permits will level off in the next year to about 200 permits per month.
