FROM OLD-TIMERS who have been inducted to young athletes still competing who may be future members, the new Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame is a huge hit. Just opened in its new digs at the Halifax Metro Centre, the Hall of Fame is a glamorous facility, displaying equipment, uniforms, pictures and complete lists of Nova Scotias sport heroes and builders in sparkling showcases and lockers. Visitors can watch film and video highlights in a sport theatre and access detailed information on inductees through a series of computers. While relishing the new location for the first time, current track star, Canadian record holder and national team member Adrienne Power of East Jeddore points out "there are interactive things for kids to do. Theyll love the place when they first see it and want to come back when they are older with a real appreciation for whats here." The interactive area referred to by Adrienne will be a major attraction for the video-game set and for adults, too.
Odds and ends: McCarthy, a Pittsburgh native, was asked what guys from Pittsburgh think of Philadelphia. McCarthy said: "It's not positive. That's why they're on the other side of the state." The Packers worked out linebacker James Davis of West Virginia, linebacker Spencer Havner of UCLA and receiver Burl Toler of Cal. The New Orleans Saints cut former Packers fullback Vonta Leach. The San Francisco 49ers cut receiver Cory Rodgers from their practice squad. Rodgers was a fourth-round draft pick of the Packers in April.

Cascade School Superintendent Jim McBride has withdrawn his request for a $50,000 payment for overseeing construction projects. McBride asked the school board in September for $50,000 as compensation for serving as the "owners' representative" while the district spent $19.5 million in bond money on construction projects. "If the desire of the community is to go out and hire someone to do it, that's fine," McBride said during Monday's school board meeting. "This evening, folks, you've told me, 'I don't want Jim McBride.'" Many people in the crowd said that they thought that representing the school district during construction was part of McBride's job and that he shouldn't be given more money for it. The audience also questioned McBride's qualifications to make decisions about construction-related questions and furnishings.
Prague- The construction of a new building of the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty was launched today at Prague 10-Hagibor with representatives of the U.S. Broadcasting Board of Governors, Foreign Minister Alexander Vondra and other Czech politicians attending. .
Sept. 27 (Bloomberg) -- New home sales in the U.S. probably fell in August to the second-lowest level in more than three years, adding to inventories and deepening the slowdown in the housing market, economists said before a report today. Purchases of new homes, which account for about 15 percent of the market, dropped 3 percent to an annual pace of 1.04 million, according to the median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey of 64 economists. An industry report this week showed the first drop in prices for existing homes since 1995. The Federal Reserve, which last week held its benchmark rate unchanged for a second month after 17 prior increases, said the weakening housing market is contributing to a wider slowdown. Record numbers of unsold houses have dragged down builder profits and depressed prices, denying consumers cash from mortgage refinancing that fueled spending the past few years.

Shares fell 3% after the home improvement chain remodeled its corporate structure and axed two of its retail executives. Home Depot also assigned new roles and duties to other executives in an effort to streamline the company's decision-making process.
